Bifurcation and asymptotics of cubically nonlinear transverse magnetic surface plasmon polaritons

Linear Maxwell equations for transverse magnetic (TM) polarized fields support single frequency surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) localized at the interface of a metal and a dielectric. Metals are typically dispersive, i.e. the dielectric function depends on the frequency. We prove the bifurcation of localized SPPs in dispersive media in the presence of a cubic nonlinearity and provide an asymptotic expansion of the solution and the frequency. The problem is reduced to a system of nonlinear differential equations in one spatial dimension by assuming a plane wave dependence in the direction tangential to the (flat) interfaces. The number of interfaces is arbitrary and the nonlinear system is solved in a subspace of functions with the H1-Sobolev regularity in each material layer. The corresponding linear system is an operator pencil in the frequency parameter due to the material dispersion. The studied bifurcation occurs at a simple isolated eigenvalue of the pencil. For geometries consisting of two or three homogeneous layers we provide explicit conditions on the existence of eigenvalues and on their simpleness and isolatedness. Real frequencies are shown to exist in the nonlinear setting in the case of PT-symmetric materials. We also apply a finite difference numerical method to the nonlinear system and compute bifurcating curves.

Ultrathin tunable UWB metasurface absorber design by exciting plasmonic modes in bilayer graphene stack

This work presents a graphene-based ultra-wideband (UWB) tunable metasurface absorber (MSA) consisting of top patterned graphene (Gpat) and bottom continuous graphene (Gcont) separated by a 2 μm thick silicon dioxide (SiO2) substrate. An absorptivity (Af) ≥ 90 % from 0.1 to 14 THz (fractional bandwidth = 197.2 %) has been achieved in three steps: (i) Fabry-Perot cavity mode has been generated near 0.1 THz using bilayer graphene stack, (ii) multiple plasmonic modes have been excited by engraving resonant slots on Gpat and (iii) plasmonic coupling strength has been enhanced between Gpat and Gcont by adjusting SiO2 substrate's thickness. The excited plasmonic modes show high absorption due to the generation of localized surface plasmon polariton (LSPP) waves. The fourfold symmetry in design nullifies the effect of the polarization angle (ϕ). Interestingly, the orthogonal modes' excitation helps to achieve similar Af response under both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations for incidence angle (θ) up to 60°. Further, an effective DC biasing mechanism has been devised to tune the chemical potential (μc) of the interconnected Gcont, which ensures common DC bias between unit cells. A DC voltage from 0 to 10.2 V can vary μc (Bottom) from 0 to 1 eV to provide frequency tunability.

Ultrahigh-Q Polarization-Independent Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber Using Pattern-Free Graphene for Sensing Applications.

In contrast to noble metals, graphene exhibits significantly lower loss, especially useful for optical sensing applications that require ultrahigh Q factors, and offer wide range tunability via an adjustable Fermi level. However, precise graphene patterning is difficult, especially for large areas, severely limiting its applications. Here, a tunable terahertz metamaterial absorber (TMMA) with ultrahigh Q factors consisting of a continuous, pattern-free graphene is demonstrated. A graphene sheet is overlaid on an Al metal array, forming a structure that supports strong localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPPs) with fields tightly confined in the graphene, minimizing loss. Theoretical results show that this TMMA exhibits an ultrahigh Q factor of 1730, a frequency sensitivity of 2.84 THz/RIU, and an excellent figure of merit (FoM) of 365.85 RIU-1, independent of polarization. A tunability from ~2.25 to ~3.25 THz is also achieved by tuning Ef of graphene from 0.3 to 0.7 eV. The proposed graphene-based TMMA holds many potential applications, particularly in the field of sensing.

Influence of High-frequency localized surface plasmon polariton effect of Al nanoparticles on luminescence efficiency of deep-blue BCzVBi OLED

It is difficult to enhance the blue or purple luminescence efficiency of organic light-emitting device ( OLED) for practice display applications. In this work, aluminum nano particles (Al-NPs) are inserted into the light-tight TmPyPb electron transporting layer (ETL) of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TAPC/BCzVBi:BCPO/TmPyPb/Liq/Al OLEDs, in which BCzVBi can emit deep-blue fluorescent light, with the attempts to overcome the above deficiency through the local surface plasmon polariton(LSPP) effect excited in Al-NP at higher resonance frequencies by the luminescence radiations from BCzVBi. The distances of Al-NPs from BCzVBi:BCPO fluorescent layer are chosen as <i>x</i> = 4, 8, 12 nm. The morphologies observed by atom force microscope and scan electron microscope show that the Al film with a thickness of 1 nm, deposited at room temperature by vacuum heat evaporate, is composed of separated Al grains (therefore, called Al-NPs) with sizes on a 10 nm scale. By inserting these Al-NPs into the TmPyPb ETL, both the current density and luminance at the same voltage decrease in comparison with the counterparts of reference devices (i.e. ones without Al-NPs) due to the worsened carrier mobility. However, the current density and luminance both rebound significantly at <i>x</i> = 8 nm. This may be due to the fact that the fluorescence quenching strongly occurs at <i>x</i> < 8 nm, and on the other hand, the local surface plasmon polariton is weakened too much at <i>x</i> > 8 nm due to attenuated radiation from BCzVBi. At <i>x</i> = 8 nm, the voltage (9 V) at which the luminance reaches a maximum value is the same as that for the reference device, but the maximum luminance itself decreases from 4200 Cd/m<sup>2</sup> to 3500 Cd/m<sup>2</sup>. However, the current density also decreases from 335.19 mA/cm<sup>2</sup> to 145.71 mA/cm<sup>2</sup>. This conversely results in a promising great increase of current efficiency from 0.88 Cd·A<sup>–1</sup> to 2.36 Cd·A<sup>–1</sup>. Subsequently, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) is enhanced by 170%, while the efficiency roll-off ratio decreases from 78% to 30.5%, with a decrement of 61% . At a high current density of 270 mA/cm<sup>2</sup>, EQE enhances 66.5%. The coupling between fluorescence excitation state and local surface plasmon polariton is determined by the overlapping between fluorescence emitting peak and plasmon resonance peak. As aluminum has a number density of free electrons, 18.1×10<sup>22</sup> cm<sup>–3</sup>, much larger than those for the other normally used metals (such as gold and silver), its spectrum of local surface plasmon polariton is enough to cover the fluorescence wavelength range of BCzVBi. These research results show that the luminescence efficiency of deep-blue OLEDs can be turned better by LSPP excited in Al-NPs at higher resonance frequencies.

Enhancement of near-field thermal radiation between composite materials with gradient plasmonic nanoparticles.

Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) with composite materials is of significant technological interest for practical applications. In this study, we investigate the NFRHT occurring between two composite materials composed of gradient plasmonic nanoparticles (GPNs). We delve into the physical mechanism underlying NFRHT, highlighting the strong coupling and enhancement effect from surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the composite/air interface or the localized SPPs (LSPPs) on the surface of nanoparticles. Furthermore, leveraging the red-shift effect caused by the gradient profile, the intensity of NFRHT can be controlled by adjusting the gradient function and volume fraction of GPNs. Notably, we observe the enhancement of NFRHT from composite materials to bulk materials, with the enhancement ratio exhibiting a notable increase at large spacing. This research establishes a theoretical foundation for the development of near-field thermal devices utilizing composite materials containing GPNs.

Tailoring linear and nonlinear plasmons of metal/MoS2/metal nanostructures.

We investigated the linear and nonlinear response of the localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in metal and MoS2 nanostructures. The results show that the response of LSPs and SPPs has an important influence on the energy exchange. SPPs with unique non-radiative characteristics can be used as energy recovery tanks to reuse the radiated energy of LSPs and promote the production of hot carriers. The energy exchange through plasmon modes can promote the transfer of hot electrons in the Au grating, the MoS2 layer, and the metal film. The fundamental field induces the increase of the second harmonic wave by introducing the second-order nonlinear source. In addition, the evolution of the lifetime of linear and nonlinear plasmonic modes is also investigated to study the underlying mechanism of the micro process in the plasmonic-photonic interaction. The plasmonic energy exchanging configuration overcomes the challenge by utilizing hot carriers. It is instructive in terms of improving the linear and nonlinear performance of plasmonic opto-electronic devices.

Multi-band perfect absorber based on an elliptical cavity coupled with an elliptical metal nanorod.

We proposed a triple-band narrowband device based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure in visible and near-infrared regions. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulated results illustrated that the absorber possessed three perfect absorption peaks under TM polarization, and the absorption efficiencies were about 99.76%, 99.99%, and 99.92% at 785 nm, 975 nm, and 1132 nm, respectively. Simulation results matched well with the results of coupled-mode theory (CMT). Analyses of the distributions of the electric field indicated the "perfect" absorption was due to localized surface plasmon polaritons resonance (LSPPR) and Fabry-Perot resonance. We developed a multi-band absorber with more ellipsoid pillars. The four band-absorbing device presented perfect absorption at 767 nm, 1046 nm, 1122 nm, and 1303 nm, and the absorption rates were 99.45%, 99.41%, 99.99%, and 99.94%, respectively. By changing the refractive index of the surrounding medium, the resonant wavelengths could be tuned linearly. The maximum sensitivity and Figure of Merit were 230 nm RIU-1 and 10.84 RIU-1, respectively. The elliptical structural design provides more tuning degrees of freedom. The absorber possessed several satisfactory performances: excellent absorption behavior, multiple bands, tunability, incident insensitivity, and simple structure. Therefore, the designed absorbing device has enormous potential in optoelectronic detection, optical switching, and imaging.

Dynamic construction of refractive index-dependent vibrations using surface plasmon-phonon polaritons

One of the fundamental hurdles in infrared spectroscopy is the failure of molecular identification when their infrared vibrational fingerprints overlap. Refractive index (RI) is another intrinsic property of molecules associated with electronic polarizability, but with limited contribution to molecular identification in mixed environments currently. Here, we investigate the coupling mode of localized surface plasmon and surface phonon polaritons for vibrational de-overlapping. The coupling mode is sensitive to the molecular refractive index, attributed to the RI-induced vibrational variations of surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) within the Reststrahlen band, referred to as RI-dependent SPhP vibrations. The RI-dependent SPhP vibrations are linked to molecular RI features. According to the deep-learning-augmented demonstration of bond-breaking-bond-making dynamic profiling in biological reaction, we substantiate that the RI-dependent SPhP vibrations effectively disentangle overlapping vibrational modes, achieving a 92% identification accuracy even for the strongly overlapping vibrational modes in the reaction. Our findings offer insights into the realm of light-matter interaction and provide a valuable toolkit for biomedicine applications.

Plasmonic Modification of Epitaxial Nanostructures for the Development of a Highly Efficient SERS Platform

Epitaxy is the process of crystallization of monocrystalline layers and nanostructures on a crystalline substrate. It allows for the crystallization of various semiconductor layers on a finite quantity of semiconductor substrates, like GaAs, InP, GaP, InGaP, GaP, and many others. The growth of epitaxial heterostructures is very complicated and requires special conditions and the precise control of the growth temperature, the pressure in the reactor, and the flow of the precursors. It is used to grow epitaxial structures in lasers, diodes, detectors, photovoltaic structures, and so on. Semiconductors themselves are not suitable materials for application in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) due to poor plasmonic properties in the UV/VIS range caused by missing free electrons in the conduction band due to the existing band gap. A plasmonic material is added on top of the nanostructured pattern, allowing for the formation of mixed photon–plasmon modes called localized surface plasmon-polaritons which stand behind the SERS effect. Typically, gold and silver are used as functional plasmonic layers. Such materials could be deposited via chemical or physical process. Attention has also been devoted to other plasmonic materials, like ones based on the nitrides of metals. The SERS performance of a functional surface depends both on the response of the plasmonic material and the morphology of the underlying semiconductor epitaxial layer. In the context of SERS, epitaxial growth allows for the fabrication of substrates with well-defined 3D nanostructures and enhanced electromagnetic properties. In this work, we described the possible potential plasmonic modification, composed of various coatings such as noble metals, TiN, and others, of well-developed epitaxial nanostructures for the construction of a new type of highly active SERS platforms. This abstract also highlights the role of epitaxial growth in advancing SERS, focusing on its principles, methods, and impact. Furthermore, this work outlines the potential of epitaxial growth to push the boundaries of SERS. The ability to design substrates with tailored plasmonic properties opens avenues for ultralow concentration detection.

Investigating Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) Formation in Silicon and Their Impact on Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS)

Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) have gained significant attention due to their ability to modify the surface morphology of materials at the micro-nanoscale and show great promise for surface functionalization applications. In this study, we specifically investigate the formation of LIPSS in silicon substrates and explore their impact on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. This study reveals a stepwise progression of LIPSS formation in silicon, involving three distinct stages of LIPSS: (1) integrated low-spatial-frequency LIPSS (LSFL) and high-spatial-frequency LIPSS (HSFL), (2) principally LSFL and, (3) LSFL at the edge of the irradiated spot, elucidating the complex interplay between laser fluence, pulse number, and resulting surface morphology. Furthermore, from an application standpoint, these high-quality multi-scale periodic patterns lead to the next step of texturing the entire silicon surface with homogeneous LIPSS for SERS application. The potential of LIPSS-fabricated silicon substrates for enhancing SERS performance is investigated using thiophenol as a test molecule. The results indicate that the Au-coated combination of LSFL and HSFL substrates showcased the highest enhancement factor (EF) of 1.38×106. This pronounced enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effects of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), intricately linked to HSFL and LSFL characteristics. These findings contribute to our understanding of LIPSS formation in silicon and their applications in surface functionalization and SERS, paving the way for sensing platforms.

Exploring plasmonic effect on exciton transport: A theoretical insight from macroscopic quantum electrodynamics.

Exciton transport in extended molecular systems and how to manipulate such transport in a complex environment are essential to many energy and optical-related applications. We investigate the mechanism of plasmon-coupled exciton transport by using the Pauli master equation approach, combined with kinetic rates derived from macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. Through our theoretical framework, we demonstrate that the presence of a silver nanorod induces significant frequency dependence in the ability of transporting exciton through a molecule chain, indicated by the exciton diffusion coefficient, due to the dispersive nature of the silver dielectric response. Compared with the same system in vacuum, great enhancement (up to a factor of 103) in the diffusion coefficient can be achieved by coupling the resonance energy transfer process to localized surface plasmon polariton modes of the nanorod. Furthermore, our analysis reveals that the diffusion coefficients with the nearest-neighbor coupling approximation are ∼10 times smaller than the results obtained beyond this approximation, emphasizing the significance of long-range coupling in exciton transport influenced by plasmonic nanostructures. This study not only paves the way for exploring practical approaches to study plasmon-coupled exciton transport but also provides crucial insights for the design of innovative plasmon-assisted photovoltaic applications.

Manipulating multiple plasmon modes by coupling fields for broadband filtering in terahertz metamaterials

Multiple modes resonance provides the possibility of broadband filtering and has great potential applications in terahertz devices, including miniaturized spectrometers, hyperspectral imagers and optical switches in communication systems. However, it is difficult to further expand the bandwidth range due to the inability to stack an infinite number of resonant structures in a finite space. Here, an innovative method is reported for manipulating two localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPP) modes by multiscale-coupled plasmonic fields to realize broadband filtering at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The interaction between two LSPP modes was verified theoretically and experimentally, exhibiting a prominent Rabi splitting and two peaks with high transmittance. Particularly, broadband filtering is accomplished by utilizing a double-layer structure that can be regarded as a cavity for inducing far-field interference. Experimental result demonstrates that the maximum transmission range of the bilayer metamaterial reaches 0.63 THz. Besides, the two wide bands can be integrated into one broadband through near-field coupling effects. The integration of strong coupling and far-field interference expands the transmission range of the double-layer metamaterial, further enhancing its capability for broadband filtering. This unique approach for manipulating multi-mode plasmonic coupling forges a convenient route for realizing broadband filtering.

Highly tunable and ultrasensitive hybrid plasmonic platform for multi-spectral sensing: Non-invasive diabetes surveillance and global warming directives

The development of tunable and extremely sensitive devices, as well as the emergence of metamaterials, has tremendously aided the evolution of plasmonic sensing technologies. However, the natural property of metamaterials severely restricts the scalability and application potential of mono-functional sensor systems. To address this shortcoming, we have investigated an ultranarrow five-band plasmonic sensor with structural tunability and high sensing behaviors in compatibility with multi-purpose application scenarios, using the finite-difference time-domain approach rigorously. Meanwhile, we theoretically formulated a hybridization model for the mutual induction of Fabry–Pérot resonances and localized surface plasmon polariton resonance, providing a theoretical basis for the utilization and conception of the highly-sensitive tunable plasmonic sensor. Most notably, we discovered and interpreted far-field phase extinction inducing separation of polarization resonance peaks in physical mechanisms. The tunability of its mutual inductance effect at the intersection distances from two-intersecting silver nanogroove was adequately exploited to further validate and effectively attain five ultra-narrow absorptivities of 96.70%, 93.93%, 99.73%, 100.00%, and 89.72% by top-level optimization. In addition, the redundant proximity between nearby peaks is compensated, extending the operating band and enhancing the practicability in multi-purpose scenarios. As a reliable source for future optical sensing, it performs well in the visible to near-infrared region, enabling detection response to non-invasive diabetes mellitus, global climate warming, and unrestricted temperature and pressure measurement. Meanwhile, minimum FWHM = 4.806 nm and maximum FOM = 115.13 RIU−1 are obtained at 293.15 K, with an associated highest sensitivity of 557.93 nm/RIU. Moreover, the fabrication technologies development of electron beam lithography and focused ion beam etching technologies enables large-scale mass production at low cost and long-term stability.

LSP-SPP Coupling Structure Based on Three-Dimensional Patterned Sapphire Substrate for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing.

Although the fabrication of controllable three-dimensional (3D) microstructures on substrates has been proposed as an effective solution for SERS, there remains a gap in the detection and manufacturability of 3D substrates with high performance. In this study, photolithography is adopted to obtain a pyramid-like array on a patterned sapphire substrate (PSS), with Al2O3 as the dielectric layer. In addition, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used to decorate Au films to obtain mass-producible 3D SRES substrates. In the case of low fluorescence, the substrate realizes the coupling of localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which is consistent with the simulation results obtained using the finite element method. The performance of the SERS substrate is evaluated using rhodamine 6G (R6G) and toluidine blue (TB) as probe molecules with detection limits of 10-11 M and 10-9 M, respectively. The substrate exhibits high hydrophobicity and excellent light-capturing capability. Moreover, it shows self-cleaning ability and long-term stability in practical applications. Allowing for the consistency of the composite substrate in the preparation process and the high reproducibility of the test results, it is considered to be promising for mass production.

Vacuum ultraviolet optical properties of GaSb determined by synchrotron rotating analyzer ellipsometry: applications in nanopillars and plasmonics

The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical properties in the range 4 eV to 15 eV of GaSb have been determined by rotating analyzer ellipsometry (RAE) using synchrotron light. The localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are studied as a means to understand the plasmonic behavior of GaSb. The large imaginary part of the dielectric function causes poor confinement of the SPP. Self-assembled GaSb nanopillars of 35 nm height are studied experimentally by RAE at different angles of incidence. The pillars are simulated numerically using an effective medium approach and the finite element method (FEM), where clear similarities between the simulations and experiment are observed. Additional dips in the reflectivity accompanied by increased nanopillar absorption and local field enhancement were observed near the surface of the pillars. These results demonstrate GaSb nanopillars to be promising candidates for photocathodes.

Sensing Mechanisms of Rough Plasmonic Surfaces for Protein Binding of Surface Plasmon Resonance Detection.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been utilized in various optical applications, including biosensors. The SPR-based sensor is a gold standard for protein kinetic measurement due to its ultrasensitivity on the plasmonic metal surface. However, a slight change in the surface morphology, such as roughness or pattern, can significantly impact its performance. This study proposes a theoretical framework to explain sensing mechanisms and quantify sensing performance parameters of angular surface plasmon resonance detection for binding kinetic sensing at different levels of surface roughness. The theoretical investigation utilized two models, a protein layer coating on a rough plasmonic surface with and without sidewall coatings. The two models enable us to separate and quantify the enhancement factors due to the localized surface plasmon polaritons at sharp edges of the rough surfaces and the increased surface area for protein binding due to roughness. The Gaussian random surface technique was employed to create rough metal surfaces. Reflectance spectra and quantitative performance parameters were simulated and quantified using rigorous coupled-wave analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. These parameters include sensitivity, plasmonic dip position, intensity contrast, full width at half maximum, plasmonic angle, and figure of merit. Roughness can significantly impact the intensity measurement of binding kinetics, positively or negatively, depending on the roughness levels. Due to the increased scattering loss, a tradeoff between sensitivity and increased roughness leads to a widened plasmonic reflectance dip. Some roughness profiles can give a negative and enhanced sensitivity without broadening the SPR spectra. We also discuss how the improved sensitivity of rough surfaces is predominantly due to the localized surface wave, not the increased density of the binding domain.

Surface plasmon polariton assisted near perfect light absorption from corrugated metal–insulator–metal structure exploiting lossy metal films

We propose and demonstrate a lithography-free self-assembled corrugated Cr/TiO2/Cr metal–insulator–metal (Cr-cMIM) structure on silica opal substrates for broadband near perfect light absorption applications. Our optimal Cr-cMIM structure have reached a spectral average absorption rate above 98% over the visible wavelength range. We carried out numerical calculations to simulate the interaction between the incident light and the Cr-cMIM structure. The simulated absorption spectra qualitatively reproduced the experimental results. Detailed analysis of the simulation results indicates that the corrugation of the Cr layers successfully couples the incident light with the localized surface plasmon polariton. The incorporation of the surface plasmonic excitation and the intrinsic ohmic dissipation of the Cr layers results in the broadband near perfect light absorption over the visible wavelength range.

Linear and nonlinear optical properties surface plasmon polariton localization in plasmonic crystal metallic nanowires

Functionality and spatial concentration of light in periodic and disordered plasmonic crystal metallic nanowires are investigated under Kerr nonlinearity. The results show that nonlinear transverse localization of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) in a periodic and disordered array of nanowires embedded in the Kerr medium changes with incident input wave amplitude (A). We study periodic and diagonal disordered nanowire arrays and study the propagation of SSPs under different inputs by solving nonlinear coupling relations. Finally, off-diagonal disordered nanowire arrays are studied. The results show that localization and effective beamwidth of the SPPs increases with an increase in their input amplitudes. Also, the SPPs become more localized with increase of diagonal (δr) and off-diagonal disorder (δd) into the nanowire arrays. Controlling SSPs' localization in the nanowire array using their input amplitude provides a high functional sub-wavelength device that can be utilized in future applications of nanophotonics functions.

High Q‐factor anapole mode based on localized spoof surface plasmon polaritons

AbstractRecently, localized spoof surface plasmon polaritons (LSSPPs) have emerged as a new research frontier due to their unique properties and potential applications in integrated circuits. The toroidal dipole is a localized electromagnetic response different from electric and magnetic dipoles. Anapole is the nonradiating source produced by the interference between identical radiation patterns of toroidal and electric dipoles in the far field. This paper proposes a novel high Q‐factor compact planar resonator consisting of split‐ring resonators to support the LSSPPs anapole at microwave frequency, which shows an apparent nonradiating charge–current configuration. In simulation and measurement, we observe the nonradiating property of the anapole mode. Further, we demonstrate that the LSSPPs anapole resonance has the tunable property, which is very sensitive to structural changes. These might lead to potential applications in the design of plasmonic deformation sensors, cloaking, and absorbers.
